In this exhibition the artist Wang Gongxin argued that light is used differently in the East and West: Western culture s looking for illumination and clarity; East Asian culture s embracing shadow and subtlety. Exploring cultural connections between light and mindsets, Wang also interrogates Japanese post-war architect Kurokawa Kisho’s concept of ‘grey space’, where distinctions between inside and outside, artificial and natural, and individual and collective are blurred.
Reflective statement
From my perspective, in this exhibition, I saw the collision of western and eastern cultures, besides the light, shadow, and nature, I also see how time works in nature and artificial and he uses digital to describe the wind which inspired me.
