Maiko has many roles in the field of art as a craftsman, curator, tutor, and artist.

She studied and apprenticed in furniture making and Japanese lacquer work in Kyoto in 1990, after that, she study furniture design at RCA. In 2008, she became the course leader of MA Designer Maker at Camberwell College of Arts, UAL, until 2020.

As a current Ma Designer Maker student, I got a lot out of this talk. During the process of her talk, she showed us some of her previous work. Take the example of a hammer she made, which looks quite ordinary but because she worked out the angle of the head to the wooden body causes the hammer to stand on its own on the table. In another example, she collect a piece of wood that used to support an old building and made a wooden contraption out of it. And the material itself has the meaning of time attached to it; the piece of wood holds many stories. She also feels lucky for having this piece of material. This is when the object material gives greater meaning to the value of this object. It suddenly made me realize that design is sometimes just a very detailed thing, But I often want to tell a lot of things with an object, but it's hard for my audience to understand. It's not easy to innovate a small detail in design, so I need to try to narrow my gaze to a single point and go deeper.
