Tutorial insight

This week I had a tutorial with Simon and Oscar, which was very enlightening.

Since the end of the unit2, I have been at a loss as to how to proceed with my project. At the moment I had two options, one was to combine the two materials. The second was to focus on the feeling that the falling leaves gave me in order to create a better emotional connection with the audience.

During the tutorial with Simon, he didn't help me make a decision but kept teaching me the methodology to guide my thinking. He said that a complete work requires concepts and materials and that my advantage was that I currently had my concepts and my materials. In talking to him he guided me to analyse two options, one was visually successful and the other was concept successful. I found that I could not make a decision. At this point, Simon kept asking me 'why' as I described my work to get me thinking. I found that when I tried to answer someone else's question, it solved my problem. At the same time, Simon also asked me to try to narrate, for example, what kind of atmosphere I wanted my work to give the audience, and how I felt about it. I describe it from the viewer's point of view, for example, "When I enter a white room, I smell the flowers, I hear the sound of water flowing, I turn around and see the water flowing into the room from outside and I feel a sense of inner peace at that moment. At that moment I felt a breeze and my heart was filled with pleasure." As I describe how I want my work to feel as an audience member, I also wrap my mind around how my work will resonate with the audience, which has inspired me. And in talking to him, I realised that I had been confused between the terms analysis and evaluation, where analysis is the description of objective issues and summaries such as data analysis, data comparison, and evaluation is the discussion of value.

When I was tutorial with Oscar, I described to Oscar my struggles and confusions. He said, "If you have a good feeling about falling leaves, go and watch how things feel when they fall and make a video." Oscar gave me a lot of references and said that when he heard my work it reminded him of 'Falling Light' which was part of Troika's solo exhibition 'Persistent Illusions'. Persistent Illusions'. There is also a studio called Drift which has a lot of installations and Oscar reminded me that my work could be an installation. When I mentioned the two options, Oscar said they could both be part of your work. That made my mind clearer.
